The Huka Falls, Aratiatia Rapids, Craters of the Moon and other tourist attractions in Taupo

A short drive (or a nice walk along the banks of the Waikato River) from the apartment you'll find New Zealand's most-photographed tourist attraction, the Huka Falls. Ejecting a massive 200,000 litres of water every second through a canyon only 15 metres across is an awe-inspiring site.

Further down the river, the Aratiatia rapids fill rapidly when the dam above the canyon is released forming a surging current of blue and white water. The release hours are 10am, 12pm, 2pm daily and in summer there is an additional release time of 4pm. Notably, the Aratiatia Rapids were used in the filming of the Hobbit film 'The Desolation of Smaug'.

Taupo is also home to an amazing array of geothermal areas including the 'Craters of the Moon' just a few minutes from Riverside Apartment. Naturally heated spas and swimming pools are also abundant with the AC Spas, DeBretts and Wairakei baths all within easy reach.

Golf, mountain biking, fishing or just relaxing in Taupo

There are several golf courses including the Wairakei course close to Riverside Apartment. For a less sedate way to spend your day, Taupo is famous for its trails, whether for running or MTB. Finish your day off with a bit of fishing in the river directly in front of the apartment. Many trout have been caught there, particularly in the peace of the evening at dusk. Fishing gear can be hired in town at a reasonable rate if you don't have your own.
